Commercial Blast Testing, 2006

ComBlast 2006

Since 2001, the ComBlast programme has conducted blast tests on glazing and other building materials, giving the commercial sector the opportunity of having products tested independently.

In September, a tenth series of such trials was successfully carried out at the test site operated by Advantica, at Spadeadam in Cumbria. A number of other manufactures showed interest in further testing during 2006. It is our intention that blast testing (with charges up to 500kg) and if necessary ballistic and attack testing should be carried out during three individual weeks within 2006.

Three weeks have been scheduled commencing 27th March, 26th June and 9th October.

It is our intention to conduct a number of arena trials with charges of 100 kg (TNT neq) and if required up to 500 kg. In addition, subject to demand, commercial trials meeting the requirements of the new draft CEN; ‘Windows, Doors and Shutters, Explosion Resistance Requirements and Classification, Part 2, Range Test’ will be carried out (EXR 1 to EXR5), with charges of 3 kg, 12 kg and 20 kg. The testing procedures shall be generally in accordance with the draft standard ISO/DIS 16933 ‘Glass in Buildings – Explosion resistant security glazing – Test and classification for arena air blast loading.

You may have forthcoming projects which require proof testing against blast loads: alternatively, you may be involved in product development for blast resistance. It is our aim to determine the level of interest for these tests, so that the schedule for the trials in three months time can be arranged.

The purpose of the ComBlast trials is to provide test data at a shared and reduced cost to the industry.

You can therefore download a faxback form, or simply fill in the online form, and submit it to us as soon as possible, letting us know which test week you would be interested in participating.
